Business English
Many Business English courses are limited to teaching the vocabulary used in different aspects of commercial life. This could be due to nature of short Business courses, employment opportunities and other factors.
We have found that students who need English for Business usually require two different types of class:
- A General English class in the morning, in which they can interact with other students of the same academic level to improve their grammar and skills.
- This is then coupled with tailored one-to-one afternoon classes. This allows the student to gain general skills and focus on very specific skills, such as sales negotiation, writing a quotation and giving a presentation within your own industry.
A veterinarian from Italy may want to improve their academic reading skills to keep up with the latest developments in best practice; a German Sales Engineer in Drinks Filtration may want to learn when to use the correct conditional to negotiate with a Russian Vodka distiller. We recognize that one size does not fit all. This may be the only English language immersion week you have time for this year. It has to be right.
However, for some students who are very busy, for example, Business Executives, the best option would be the Immersion Course which involves intensive 1-to-1 tuition over a period of a few weeks. This course will focus on specific English skills and vocabulary to meet the needs of a particular business industry.
BULATS
As an authorised BULATS agent ELA offers students access to the BULATS online test - one of the exams offered by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. This test can be taken ELA. It is fast, versatile and accurate and is becoming an increasingly popular means of English language skill evaluation.
The test fee is £40.

IELTS – International English Language Testing System
IELTS is an important way of gaining access to universities in English speaking countries and throughout the world where English is the language used for studying. It measures the ability to communicate in English across all 4 language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking.
More than 6,000 education institutions, faculties, government agencies and professional organizations around the world recognize IELTS scores as a trusted and valid indicator of ability to communicate in English. Over 1,000,000 people a year are now using IELTS to open doors throughout the English-speaking world and beyond. The test can be taken several times a year across 120 countries, and is one of the fastest growing English language tests in the world, it sets the standard in integrity, research and innovation.
ELA offers IELTS courses over 3 weeks for 10 hours/week in the afternoons or over 8 weeks for 4 hours/week in the evenings. The afternoon course can be combined with a General English class taken in the mornings of 15 hours/week.
Our IELTS course can provide you with the skills you need to achieve the score you want with classes aimed at improving your performance in each of the four skills.
ELA can help you prepare for the examination. Krystian Chojnowski from Poland, who wants to study International Business at The University of Edinburgh says: ‘I need to score 7.5 in my IELTS Exam. The skills you need to pass the exam are not the same as for General English. The exam preparation course gives me the listening, reading and writing skills I will need to get into Edinburgh University.’
Students should already be at an intermediate to upper intermediate level before starting the course.
